Third generation commercial fisherman Ryan French has been fishing since he was able to walk. One of his first jobs was working on crab gear; he has also crewed on black cod (sablefish) and crab fishing trips with his father and uncle.
Ryan is a familiar sight on the Morro Bay waterfront, where he works offloading fishing boats and as a deckhand for Sub Sea Tours & Kayaks.
Ryan owns a skiff he uses for sportfishing and for shuttling friends around the bay. In his spare time, he enjoys surfing and playing the trombone.
Although Ryan is sticking close to Morro Bay right now while he gets his college education, afterwards it’s suspected that he will follow in the footsteps of his father, mother, uncle and grandfather, and turn to the sea for his livelihood. When asked if this were so, he replied that he plans “to continue working on the ocean and am currently working on obtaining a captain’s license.”
